The Giant Breed Calorie Myth

Most owners assume bigger dogs need more calories to grow strong. This is one of the most damaging beliefs in giant breed care.

Overfeeding forces the skeleton to support body mass faster than bone and cartilage can develop — causing irreversible orthopedic damage that may not show up until years later. The goal is not maximum growth. It is controlled growth.

If your dog has a health condition, is recovering from surgery, or your vet has recommended a specific diet, always follow that guidance over any general estimate.

How This Calculator Works

Daily calorie needs are calculated in two steps:

RER (Resting Energy Requirement)
The baseline calories your dog burns at rest — breathing, circulation, cell repair. Calculated as: 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75

MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement)
RER multiplied by a life stage factor reflecting your dog's age, activity, and reproductive status. For giant breed puppies, that multiplier ranges from 1.6 to 3.0 — and getting it right matters more than in any other breed group.

These are general reference values. Individual dogs vary — which is why a vet check every few months, especially during puppyhood, is worth more than any formula.

Giant Breeds Are Different — Here Is Why

Puppies need less than you think
Giant breed puppies should not be fed for rapid weight gain. Their growth plates stay open longer and their skeletons mature more slowly than smaller breeds. Excess weight during this window puts load on joints that are not ready for it.

The Great Dane exception
Great Danes have a documented higher energy requirement in the first two months after weaning — they should not drop below 2.5× their RER during this critical phase. Our calculator accounts for this, but if you have a Dane puppy, a conversation with your vet about their growth curve is especially worthwhile.

Coat length matters
Long-coated giants — Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards — have measurably lower energy needs than short-coated breeds of the same weight. Coat insulation reduces heat loss and, with it, the calories needed to stay warm.

Adults burn less per kilo than small dogs
Giant breed adults have slower metabolisms relative to their size. A neutered adult companion typically needs just 1.4–1.6× RER — significantly less per kg than a small breed dog.
