Renaissance anatomists studied the body to understand power. The Irish Wolfhound earned that study.
Rendered in ochre and deep sepia ink on aged parchment, this full-body anatomical illustration labels the Irish Wolfhound's scapula, femur, fibula, and musculature in Latin — "Observatio Musculorum" — exactly as a 15th-century naturalist would have documented a specimen worth documenting. The dog stands in a composed lateral profile, wiry coat suggested through loose crosshatching, the skeletal and muscular overlays visible beneath the skin on both forelegs and hindquarters. Faded manuscript text borders the composition: "Canis lupus hibernicus — Magnitudo ingens." Large magnitude, indeed. No breed has better justification for a formal anatomical record — this animal was bred to bring down wolves, and the structure shown here explains exactly how.
