This woodblock-style illustration places a fawn and black Mastiff — wrinkled brow, heavy jowls, full body seated — directly on a rocky outcrop at the center of Hokusai's Great Wave composition. The curling navy and white foam towers behind him on both sides, threatening everything. He does not look threatened.
