Irish Wolfhound Gift Shirt | Ancient Breed | Comic Pop Art | Noble Giants
Celtic warriors brought them to battle. Roman consuls received them as diplomatic gifts. The Irish Wolfhound is the oldest breed most people have never stood next to.
An Irish Wolfhound rendered in full comic pop-art style — bold graphic lines, vivid colour blocks, the breed's extraordinary height and wiry coat made immediate and graphic. The text reads ANCIENT BREED — two words for a history that runs longer than most nations.
The Irish Wolfhound appears in Celtic mythology as the Cú Faoil — the great hunting hound — and in Roman records as a prize sent from the provinces. The breed hunted elk and wolf across Ireland for centuries; when the Irish wolf was extirpated in the eighteenth century, the dog nearly followed it into extinction. George Graham revived the breed in the 1870s from the few surviving specimens. The dog that exists today is both ancient and, in its modern form, relatively young — a paradox the Irish Wolfhound carries without effort.
The Noble Giants Comic Pop Art Collection honours the breeds that have been significant long enough to become part of the historical record. This is one of them.
