The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest dog breed in the world by average height. The minimum breed standard for males is 79 centimetres at the shoulder; most exceed it. On their hind legs, Irish Wolfhounds regularly reach 180 to 200 centimetres — the height of a tall adult human. The breed was used to hunt elk and wolf in medieval Ireland, which required a dog large enough to physically overpower prey that most hunting dogs could only chase.
