The Spanish Mastiff — Mastín Español — has guarded the sheep flocks of the Iberian Peninsula since before the Roman Empire. Its job was specific: to walk the Cañadas Reales, the ancient drove roads of Spain, protecting flocks from wolves and bandits across journeys of hundreds of kilometres. The breed was shaped by two millennia of selection for size, independence and courage — working alone, in terrain that no other livestock guardian could manage, against threats that most dogs would retreat from.
